January Meeting Recap

In our first meeting of 2014 the Houston Stonewall Young Democrats were proud to welcome Senator John Whitmire as our featured guest speaker.  In addition we were fortunate to be joined by Kim Ogg, running for Harris County District Attorney, and a number of candidates running for judicial positions in Harris County.

Senator Whitmire's history supporting LGBT equality is very well documented and his leadership in the Senate has helped fight off and call out extreme Republican legislation.  As Dean of the Senate, Senator Whitmire is the senior most member of the Texas Senate and with his seniority holds influence and power.

At tonight's meeting Senator Whitmire gave our members some behind-the-scenes information regarding Senator Wendy Davis' now famous filibuster.  The Senator was able to give us a personal view of the lead-up to the filibuster, how Democrats prepared for it, the ultimate decision made by Senator Davis to lead it, and the Republicans complete disregard for the long-standing rules of the Texas Senate.

As always, Senator Whitmire spoke honestly and candidly about the challenges facing Texans.

We were also fortunate enough to hear his perspective and personal story about being a young Democrat running for public office, and the importance of young people getting (and staying) involved in our political process - something HSYD is proud to help facilitate.

Join us next month for our February meeting where the membership will be voting on endorsements for contested races in the March Democratic Primary.
